The White Stripes Break Up

A sad day in alternative music as Jack and Meg White’s band, The White Stripes, one of the most successful and critically acclaimed duos ever in alternative music, released a statement on their website discussing their official break up. The band known for some of the best music of the past decade, from “We’re Going to Be Friends” to the brilliance of the Elephant album (a classic now),  the elements of blues in songs like “My Doorbell” to the rough political, “Icky Thump”. Each White Stripes record was a contribution to music, not all artists can say such a thing. They changed the alternative music landscape with other acts in the late 90s and remain one of the most original. Health, artistic differences, or lack of passion are not reasons for the break up according to their statement, but rather a “for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.” Which is a beautiful way to come to an end. The statement goes on to discuss one of the best ways to leave such an important and creative art form, saying “The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to.” A concept I believe and show that the White Stripes are leaving on a high note. Thank you for sharing with the world such entrancing and inspirational music Meg and Jack White.
